Five Unique Christmas Alternatives to Escape To

While many of us enjoy a white Christmas, there are those of us that would rather hang their stockings from a coconut tree. No matter what traditions you hold, you can always celebrate the joy of travel instead. Although some destinations are more traditional than others (like the Christmas Markets of Germany), other destinations offer a unique look at the lore and celebrations of the season for the frugal traveler who has already been everywhere.

Celebrate like Good King Wenceslas in Prague

When good King Wenceslas looked down upon the Feast of Stephen, lore suggests it may have taken place in Prague, Czech Republic. The city boasts two historic holiday markets in both the square named after the Bohemian king, as well as the Old Town Square.

The city is not just known for their love of open-air holiday marketplaces. This famous European city is also home of the National Theatre and State Opera, both of which offer holiday-themed performances throughout the season. For those who cherish the traditions of old, Prague offers a mix of the classics with a contemporary flare.

See the Northern Lights in Helsinki

For those who prefer their winters to be frozen, Finland offers the perfect opportunity for travelers to simply let it go. This major city offers frugal travelers a view of winter that very few get – not to mention a new appreciation for the northern lights at night.

Ride in Santa’s Sleigh in Lapland

Those who want to get the most of their holiday experience may want to consider taking the short domestic flight to Lapland, a known holiday destination. Travelers to this small winter town can enjoy a sleigh ride pulled by real reindeer, or cross-country skiing on one of many trails.

Celebrate Christmas South Carolina Style
For some, the cold of ice and snow just simply isn’t appealing. Instead of taking a trip to the colder parts of the world, some travelers opt for a little southern hospitality during the holiday season.

Taking a turn on Christmas in a way only they could, Charleston offers travelers the option to incorporate the charms of the Palmetto State into their traditions. Visitors can roast pecans instead of chestnuts on an open fire and raise a glass of bourbon egg nog for cheer.

Or Try the Scottish Variety
Nothing says Christmas quite like the light snow glistening off the rooftops of Edinburgh’s historic castles and residences. One of Europe’s most famous bastions of art and culture, this great Scottish city does not skimp during the holiday season.

Whether it is enjoying warm haggis, or listening to the songs of the pipers throughout the city, Edinburgh does the holidays in a way only they can provide. Those who want a less-than-traditional getaway away from the holiday markets may want to consider Edinburgh.

Warm Up In Santa Barbara
Growing up on California’s Central Coast, I often thought that snow-filled holiday seasons were simply reserved to cards by Currier and Ives. With Santa Barbara being but a stone throw away, it is easy to see how I came to that conclusion.

Although it is often better equated with the vacations of the rich and famous, Santa Barbara is a favorite getaway of winter travelers for the fair weather and year-round wineries. Travelers can hang their stocking by the beach in the middle of December, or take in some of the best shopping in California down historic State Street, leading to the Santa Barbara Mission.

No matter what you celebrate or what traditions you enjoy, all of us at Frugal Travel Guy wish you the happiest of holiday seasons and warm wishes for a joyful New Year!
