I have always been fascinated by points programs that are far off the beaten path, which sometimes earn travelers better rewards for their spending. I was disappointed that, despite offering Southwest Airlines gift cards, I could not combine GameStop PowerUp Rewards towards frugal travels and free video games.
However, the search for other programs do not stop. Which lead me to find iPrefer Hotel Rewards from Preferred Hotels.
In anticipation of my next adventure, where I will be offered free nights at a member of Preferred Hotels, I wanted to find out more about this program – and what value it could offer me during my travels. With iPrefer Hotel Rewards, I was not disappointed with my discoveries.
iPrefer Hotel Rewards Benefits
Much like other hotel rewards programs, travelers get benefits simply for joining the program. However, unlike other programs, those at the lowest tier are still given elite benefits often reserved for high spenders.
For simply joining the program, travelers can receive priority early check-in and a late check-out, when available from the hotel. Furthermore members of the program – both those who sign up ahead of their stay and top-tier members – qualify for room upgrades based on availability. With most hotel chains, these benefits would only be reserved for top-tier members, or those who get benefits through programs like Fine Hotels and Resorts through The Platinum Card from American Express.
The base level also comes with many of the standard benefits as well, including complimentary internet access and 10 points per dollar spent at Preferred Hotel Locations. The top-tier level, iPrefer Hotel Rewards Elite, comes with all of the aforementioned benefits, but offers 15 points per dollar spent and a welcome amenity for travelers. According to the iPrefer website, welcome amenities can range from a bottle of wine, to artisan chocolates and resort credits – a far cry from bonus points.
Like most other programs, iPrefer also allows travelers to status match to the top tier as well. This could play to my personal benefit, as I can request a match from my Starwood Preferred Guest or Marriott Rewards gold status prior to my trip.
How to spend iPrefer Hotel Rewards Points
Like all other traditional programs, iPrefer allows travelers to use their points towards hotel stays. Where the program differs is how points are used to earn free nights. iPrefer Hotel Rewards grants Reward Certificates in exchange for points, starting at 12,500 points for a $25 reward certificate. Although this is a much more straightforward way of doing business, it also puts a low value on points: reward certificates are valued at 0.2 cents per point.
Because the program offers reward certificates instead of categories towards hotel nights, the rewards can be used for nearly anything at participating hotels. As a result, those who prefer to pay with cash can use their points towards other hotel experiences, including fine dining and spa treatments.
How to earn iPrefer Hotel Rewards Points
One of the few downsides to the iPrefer Hotel Rewards program is the fact they have no transfer partners. Ultimate Rewards collected on Chase cards or Membership Rewards collected on American Express cards cannot be transferred into the iPrefer program. The only way to earn points is by staying at one of their independently owned and operated hotels.
For luxury travelers who would rather stay at a boutique hotel instead of a large chain, Preferred Hotels and Resorts offers five unique brands, ranging from the top-end Legend properties and Preferred Residences, to the elegant and smart LVX and Lifestyle brands. Each of their five brands offer travelers a different perspective on their locations, which they may not be able to get from a chain hotel.
Final thoughts
The frugal traveler who parlays cash back earnings into travel, like those earned on the Barclaycard Arrival Plus World Elite MasterCard, can make the most of the iPrefer Hotel Rewards program by using that cash to stay at some of the world’s unique properties. For those who play their rewards right, this program may be one that can yield long-term results – and one you should be aware of prior to travel.
