Delta’s Double Miles Promotion Is Back

If you are a frequent flyer aboard Delta Air Lines, or just like to collect SkyMiles: happy days are here once more. The airline is once again offering a “Spring Into 2X Miles” promotion, allowing targeted customers to double their mileage earning opportunities with new shopping partners.

Although we received word of the promotion via e-mail, the website is available to anyone who has a SkyMiles membership. Simply enter your SkyMiles number to see if you are selected to earn double miles on the ground.

If you haven’t used our tips for multiplying your miles via shopping portalsdining programs, or other partnerships, now is a great time to start. Through this promotion, your miles earned from partners are doubled between now and May 31, 2018.

So how does the promotion work?

If you didn’t earn SkyMiles with a partner in 2017, now is your opportunity to earn double miles through those partners now. After registering your SkyMiles number, you can earn double miles at Marriott Rewards/Starwood Preferred Guest, Airbnb, Lyft, Hertz Car Rental and Alamo, Enterprise and National Rent-A-Car.

If you have been using all of these partners to improve your SkyMiles earnings, you may not necessarily qualify for the promotion. The “Spring Into 2X Miles” deal is only an option for those who haven’t earned more miles through a partner promotion last year. But the good news is you are at least well versed on how to earn more miles and probably have the best frugal travel habits on your block.

But aren’t SkyMiles severely devalued?

While SkyMiles was the first program to introduce a dynamic award chart and change the conversation on how flyers use their miles, there are still some good uses for SkyMiles. If you are flexible with your travel dates, you can find a lot of good deals across the country and around the world with Delta’s miles. In addition, miles can also be used to book partner flights, like those aboard Virgin Atlantic and KLM. A trip to Europe using SkyMiles can cost as little as 70,000 miles per person.

If you hold a Delta SkyMiles airline credit card, you can also use your miles to pay off airfare as well. The one downside to this plan is that your miles are worth only one cent each, the same as using Membership Rewards points through American Express Travel. But if you need to fly somewhere in a hurry and you have no other options, this can be a good backup plan.

In addition, even if you don’t like SkyMiles, there are plenty of other opportunities to use those miles while flying Delta. SkyMiles can be used to upgrade flights or can be spent in the Sky Club. If you have a flight coming up on Delta and just want something extra to improve your experience, this promotion offers a great way to boost your balance.

Bottom line: should I sign up for this promotion?

Overall, this promotion offers a good way to earn double miles while shopping with some of the brands you use already. If you also hold a Delta SkyMiles airline credit card, you can even stack the awards to get closer to your next trip. I will be signing up for the promotion because I’m planning to use SkyMiles for my annual trip to Indianapolis this August.

However, the promotion isn’t for everyone. If SkyMiles isn’t one of your primary programs, you don’t have any points-earning credit cards from American Express to transfer Membership Rewards to SkyMiles, or you just don’t want to travel on Delta, then you may want to consider other promotions offered by your airline of choice.

Will you be signing up for this promotion? Or will you pass on earning bonus SkyMiles. Let me know your thoughts in the comments below.
