HNA co-founder and chairman fall of a cliff in France yesterday and died while photos were taken.
HNA owns Hainan Airlines, Radisson hotels, 30% stake in NH hotels (Spanish chain) and 25% stake in Hilton.
Here’s an excerpt from WSJ (access their piece here):
HNA said Mr. Wang, 57 years old, died unexpectedly Tuesday after an accidental fall. He was accompanied by a few colleagues from HNA during the sightseeing trip in Provence, a person close to the company said.
Mr. Wang was visiting a cliff-side church in Bonnieux, a village in the Vaucluse department of France’s southeast, according to a French police official. He stood on a wall meant to keep people from falling off the cliff and asked a friend to take a photo of him, the official said. Mr. Wang then fell over the side of the cliff, about 10-15 meters, and died at the scene, the official added.
Conclusion
First when I saw this news yesterday, I thought that there might be fool play involved because HNA was going through some difficulties as of late and selling off assets.
Seems that taking photos around European sights is dangerous this year for tourists as many have fallen while taking selfies.
