Order a Metal Amex Gold Card in Less Time Than It Takes to Make Coffee

American Express just rolled out a slew of positive updates to the Premier Rewards Gold Card, including a $120 annual dining credit, 4x points at US restaurants and supermarkets and change in name to the American Express® Gold Card. Also among these changes is a new metal design, similar to the Platinum Card® from American Express. Existing cardholders can request a metal version, and luckily there’s an easy way to do so online.

The first step is to decide whether you want the gold design or the limited-edition rose gold one, which is only available until January 9, 2019.

If you want the gold version, log in to your American Express account, make sure your Gold card is selected and click the “Account Services” tab toward the top of the page. On the left side of the page, you can select the “Card Management” option, and then you’ll see a an option to “Order a Replacement Card for Damaged, Lost, or Stolen Cards” — click that, and select “Request Metal Card.”

Confirm the security code on the back of the card as well as your shipping address, and you’re all set.

If you want the limited-edition rose gold card, click the chat button in the bottom right of your online account to make your request. You’ll be asked to confirm some account details, and voilà, your request will be submitted. Do note that authorized users will receive whichever color card the primary cardholder requests — there’s no way to mix and match the colors of cards part of the same account.

Once the new, metal card has been requested, you’ll get an email confirming the metal card is on its way to your billing address. You’ll be able to continue using your plastic card until the new card arrives. Once you get the metal version, destroy the plastic version for your security.

As a reminder, the American Express Gold Card currently comes with a welcome bonus of 25,000 points after you spend $2,000 in the first three months. Plus, 20% back as a statement credit, up to $100, on dining purchases at US restaurants for the first three months of cardmembership (offer ends January 9, 2019). Although the card has a higher annual fee of $250 now, it won’t go into effect for existing cardholders until April 1, 2019, and the additional perks help justify it.
