File this one under things that will get people saying “Ah, millennials” again. Apparently so many of you have been ordering the new, limited-edition rose gold American Express® Gold Card that it’s caused some serious delivery issues. Oops.
TPG reader Jaime sent us this tip, and, as to be expected, we got a kick out of it.
It’s not clear exactly what the Amex rep meant by “crashed the USPS” system — were other non-Amex card deliveries affected, we wonder? — but the demand for rose gold Amex Gold cards is clearly leading to delays for new card holders. Another reader reported that the authorized user card on their account showed up approximately 10 days prior to the primary card. The authorized user card couldn’t be activated, and American Express didn’t have a record of the primary card being shipped at all.
We can’t say we’re completely surprised. What sets this card apart from a lot of the others is its emphasis on food and dining; my life revolves on where I’m eating next, so it’s a huge perk for me that this card not only earns the most points out of any card on dining purchases in the US, but it also gives you up to $120 in annual dining credits.
It also has a $100 annual airline fee credit, so there’s a really solid mix of travel and food perks. Granted, the 25,000-point welcome offer after spending $2,000 in the first three months is lower than what you’ll find on some other cards, but there are ways to score a higher offer.
A spokesperson for American Express said, “Due to high demand for our new metal Gold Cards, some Card Members may experience delayed deliveries of their new Cards. All impacted Card Members can expect to receive their Cards by November 10th. Current Gold Card Members impacted by the delays can continue to use their Card as usual. New Gold Card Members can use the account number provided when they were approved for the Card to make purchases online and in store.”
Apply before January 9 and you could get your hands on one of the biggest millennial trends since avocado toast, just as long as, you know, American Express doesn’t run out of rose gold cards.
